Cheaper Car Insurance

Options
A big thanks to Martin

I followed his 4 tips to getting cheaper car insurance and managed to get £100 less than my renewal quote.

I tried Direct Line who I was insured with last year and had sent me a renewal of £340. When they couldn't match my cheapest quote (Post Office with £50 cashback) they told me to try buying online (which I had already done as one of the tips). Online Direct Line was £270, £70 cheaper than the quote they sent me.

The woman I spoke to got in a bit of a fluster when I asked her why the online quote was so much lower then the one I got through the post. She said that I got 10% discount for buying online. I said 10% of £270 is £27, so my renewal should have only been £300, not £340. She really didn't know what to say, and in the end she said she'll 'log it for the record'.

You've got to watch these companies, they'll all try it on.

So thanks Martin, you've saved me loads and made me more aware of money-saving all round! :rotfl:

Its always worth haggling with them, MrJudi got a 30% discount on insuring a second vehicle. If you dont ask, then you dont get.

  • It is definately worth haggling. But do your research first. This week we changed our car (2000cc) for a more expensive one with a larger engine size (3000cc). The telephone operator informed me the premium to cover the remaining 3 months was £92 extra but 10 minutes haggling brought this down to £75. I already had the name of another company willing to insure the car at a competitive price. Their manager reluctantly offered me £10 as a gesture of goodwill but I stuck fast for the extra £7.
