BT Basic's a joke!

I cannot believe that I have just received a letter telling me that unless I am in receipt of state benefits I will no longer be able to have my light user rental with BT. As somebody who has had to watch the pennies and has gone without for most of my life in order to put a bit by when I got to a pensionable age, I've always been economical with my phone calls. BT put me on the light user tariff which suited me down to the ground as I dont have many people to call, yet now I've been told that my tariff is no longer available and has been changed to BT basics and unless I'm in receipt of certain benefits I will have to change. While I acknowledge that a lot of people who have always worked are now in difficulty, there are an even larger number of people in this country who milk the system for all they can get. People like myself who are on an extremely low income but have been stupid enought to save, again are going to be penalized. I might as well have spent it all and then go and claim along with all those who procreate in order to get their free coucil houses etc... and no doubt will be put on the basics tariff. Basics indeed, I'm waiting for Tescos to say you can only buy their value range if your claiming income support!!

Whilst I appreciate your position BT is not a charity, perhaps you should try Tiscali, Talk Talk etc and see if the will subsidise you?

Obviously they will not, so why should BT?

    Declare interest as BT shareholder

BT was a monopoly who ripped -off the British public for donkey`s years.
Luckily a bit of competition has crept in to knock them off their perch.
So to try to claw back money they`ve decided to hit the poorest part of the community.
I wouldn`t expect no more or no less from a company that lost it`s way a long time ago.

Declare interest as a ex BT shareholder who sold them at £11 a share :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

There are several postings about this. I know several people in your situation, and think that this is rather unfair. My only suggestion is to cancel the BT line and get a cheap Pay As You Go mobile phone.

I have found evidence that some people on BT Light User have been automatically transferred to BT Basic without needing to be on the relevant benefits. I quoted some and asked the BT representative who posts in the Home Phone threads for an explanation.

From the tone of your posts, it seems that your work for BT as you have a tendency never to offer anything helpful to the poster.

Regardless of that (probably unfounded and certainly unwarranted) accusation, the question is valid.

For that matter, why won't Virgin cable my street?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
