Passports and moving house

I did not know where else to put this question but thought here was the best bet to start with.

I have just realised that after changing everything after moving last year. One thing is passports.

I have looked on the passport web site and can see nothing about moving house. I assume that I have to let them know just like you do with the driving licence.

Anyone know. I know I could ring them up but thought I would ask the question here first.

Thanks in advance.

Yours

Calley

Your Driving Licence has your address on it, your passport doesn't.

Yes I know that. That was not the question I asked. My bank passbook does not have my address in it but if handed in to a branch would be posted back to me as the bank have my details.

You are telling me that when I move house the passport office don't give a monkeys where I am. So I could just apply for passports and then move and then they would never have a paper trail for me.

That to me seems very strange for something as important as a passport. So what happens if I was stopped by passport control coming back in the country and they wanted to detain me. I can tell they any old address and they would believe me. And they have no way of checking my details if I have no other ID.

Never mind I will ring them up or have a chat with the postoffice tomorrow.

Correct. It's a passport not an ID card. They only care when it's time to apply for a new one.

If it is not ID then why do banks etc use it as ID as to who you are. And surely your address is part of who you are. And why have are pictures on them.

And why would an ID card have an address on it. If they had any sense then it would be on bar code. Rather written than on the card.

But I still find this very strange. So if my passport was stolen and used illegally by someone. And the police wanted to talk to me about it. They would have no way of finding me as I had moved and there is no way to give the passport office a change of address.

    Amazing the things you learn.

  • Why don't you ring them up and ask. Or why not go to your nearest main post office and ask there.

    Just a thought like.

They ask for photo ID and a utilities bill with your address on it.

They do not need a paper trail they have already got all the information they need from when you applied for a Passport. When you apply or reapply you can be traced from your name and date of birth etc. Your address is not relevant.

If you lose your Passport you apply for a new one. As far as I am aware if it is returned to the Passport Agency they would destroy it and you just apply for a new one. Your Passport is not ID as stated above, but an agreed and accept method of crossing international borders to indicate which country you are a resident etc in, not where you may or may not reside in that country. If other agencies, companies (Banks and Buiding Societies) and the like use it as ID that is their prerogative, but it is not what a Passport is issued for.
