Second home insurance

Hi there - anybody got any good tips regarding getting a competitive insurance quote for a second home?

Most of Martin's home insurance tips don't apply to second homes as many of the quotes generated by MoneySupermarket.com et al are specifically not for second homes.

Many thanks in advance,
confabulator

    is the property let?
  • No it's not let. It's occasionally lent to friends, but that's probably no more than a week or two a year.

some insurers have restictions with regard to an empty property - ie. m,ust turn off water ect over apprx 60 days

have you got insurance on it at the mo?
  • Yes, but insurance is running out. It was a standard insurance because we were living there full-time until about six months ago.

And I turn off the water as a matter of course when I'm not there. It's never empty for as long as 60 days. Probably the longest would be 45 days.

if thats the case and its not let then try some main insurers, or martin's tips for new insurance - just make sure you read the terms and conditions

this is the kind of situation where using an insurance broker can be useful. Can't make any specific recommendations, but one should know where to start looking (and more importantly, who not to bother with!)
