This is where they/you have gone wrong. Get some more quotes from people that actually see the job and can explain to you what needs doing.
exactly the point i was going to make
you're making a crisis out of what is probably a misinterpratation of a phrase used.
get a couple of builders down and see what they think;)
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
    ^^2nd that if your around.

Without them looking at the job, they cant quote you.

So that means getting 2-3 builders in for quotes.

If they can 'fit you in next week' id be looking elsewhere. Expect maybe a 6-8 week wait maybe.

    Good ones are always busy..

ive never heard of underpinning for a simple job like this.

    Thanks for all you comments.

We had a few builders out average cost seems to be around £750 (not to bad) no mention of under pinning by any of them and i did'nt mention under it either. So i think i can assume it's not needed.

    Cheers

I don't think they will be underpinning but laying concrete around the walls under the floor to help spread/support the load. This is what my uncle advised when I knocked through a wall 20 years ago in a Edwardian property and a surveyor agreed with him.

I can't advise on the costs as I did the a lot of the work myself.
