Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I last posted (lost track of when, it was so long ago!). I'm 34 weeks tomorrow and have had quite an eventful pregnancy in the last few months! I stopped reading the thread after I had some bleeding on Christmas Eve and was convinced that was it and I had had another missed miscarriage, even though I was 14 weeks...fortunately when we got back to Belgium I was able to see my doctor and she confirmed that whilst I'd had some contractions and needed to rest, the baby was fine. However, every time I looked at things about pregnancy on the internet, I'd start diagnosing myself with an abrupted placenta or something, so I decided to avoid reading things for the time being!
I had a scan at 22 weeks (we are expecting a little boy) which showed that he was fine, but that there was a bit of a problem with the circulation in one of my uterine arteries..so then I had to have another scan at 28 weeks, which showed that all was normal again and that the baby was already head down (and making things pretty uncomfortable!)
Anyway, then I saw my doctor who said that I had to rest again because I'd had more contractions and also that I had to have a 2hr blood test for diabetes because the first test they had done had come back positive. So it did turn out that I have become diabetic (cue testing blood glucose levels twice a day and eating a pretty boring diet, which does unfortunately not include Belgian chocolate or ice cream!)
Then when I got to 30 weeks, I was just sitting at the computer, minding my own business, when I started getting terrible pain in one side...I didn't realise it but I'd gone into labour. Fortunately my doctor told me to go to hospital and they were able to stop things before I got too far, but that led to 3 nights in hospital followed by 1 week complete bed rest. I'm still on medication at the moment, but I am at least now allowed to go for walks and my antenatal classes...although walking can be a bit painful, so I'm not hugely active at the moment...
I started letting myself read the thread again, because I figured what else could go wrong anyway??! Congratulations on all the recent births and I hope those of you who are close now have your babies very soon. I can also wholeheartedly recommend the level of care they give you in Belgium (although it's not completely free...still waiting for the bill for the last foray into hospital!)...in case anyone ever finds themselves living out here.
Sorry, I'll stop waffling now and go and update the list with my new due date etc.:jBaby boy, Hugh, born on the 8th June 2009, weighing 2.5kg:j0 -

Well, I've had my sweep this afternoon at 41 weeks, it was more uncomfortable than a smear test but not too much. I'd definitely have it again as a chance at avoiding induction. It lasted about 40 seconds - I was dreading that she was going to be a bit half-hearted about it, but I could tell she was thorough. It literally just involved her sweeping her fingers around the neck of the cervix a few times in a circular motion until she was happy that she was seperating whatever it is that needs seperating!
Towel on bed, head on pillow, soles of feet together and knees as far apart as possible incase anyone obsesses over feeling more prepared/comfortable by knowing all those daft details like me.
She said that she could feel baby's head "...it's just there" (and it's hair!!) so it's nearly fully engaged (if not completely).... I also asked if the cervix was effaced (thinned) and she replied in the affirmative - but trying to extract exact information from her was a bit like getting blood from a stone
I was hoping to hear it in numbers... how many 5ths engaged... percentage effacement etc... but she didn't elaborate and I'm too shy to push for detail.
However, she did say I was about 2cm dilated (I'm hoping that's good...) oh and she also said that the baby wasn't moving away from her fingers if she pushed so I think that sounds like it's fully locked in position (I'm making poor baby sound like a missile :rotfl:)
She didn't give any hints as to whether she thought I was gonna go into labour before the induction on Friday, she talked about how she didn't think there was much point in performing a sweep until 7 days overdue... some of the mucus plug came away which she showed me on her glove so that I knew what to recognise and look out for. I've had a bit more come out everytime I've wiped after a wee since.
She also said to expect period type pains which is natural after "mucking about with the cervix like this" - which I've been experiencing - so at least it's textbook so far :j
Um, trying not to forget anything, sorry if this is all a bit TMI though
She also said to keep active, so I've been for a long walk and am sat here bouncing on the birthing ball. Gonna walk up and down the stairs sideways next. :rotfl:
I'm so glad baby is engaged now - I think she engaged last night, I've never had a braxton hick that I've noticed yet... but I had some real pain between 3-4am last night (thought I was having proper contractions!) right at the top of my bump and in my back which felt like it was 'pushing down' and baby was VERY active at the same time. So I think that's when it might have happened. Funnily enough I didn't feel different afterwards though - I was expecting it to feel like I had a bowling ball between my thighs, but for me, it doesn't feel much different to before.
This is an absolute essay, sorry about that - but like my ECV story, if it's useful to even one person then I don't care!! Hopefully I won't be back to share an induction story though *fingers tightly crossed*
Any spare labour vibes would be so gratefully received (again!!)don't blow out other people's candles to make your own burn brighter...0 -
Mrs.Moc, that is great news!!!! Well done on getting to 29 weeks!!!! And hopefully baby stays put and placenta behaves for a while longer.0

Thanks...I think that he's just a little impatient, although apparently it doesn't mean that he will make another early escape attempt. It seems that I am holding steady at not quite 1cm dilated, just because his head is pushing down on the cervix at the moment...I've told him he has to wait another 4 weeks, so we'll see if the voice of authority works or not .
I'm off to an exciting information session on epidural analgesia at the hospital now....don't think that gas and air is an option over here, so I'm strongly tempted to take them up on their kind offer to stick a needle in my back...:jBaby boy, Hugh, born on the 8th June 2009, weighing 2.5kg:j0
