As an ex-childminder I can appreciate it from both sides, not everyone takes their kids out for 4 weeks hols, some don't take them out at all and others take them out at the drop of a hat and as you're self employed and cannot fill that space for the odd week you need to make sure it's financially viable for your business to survive...that's the whole idea of the contracts, for the childminder to set out his/her terms and for the parents to agree them.

It may seem like the childminder is "being paid for doing nothing" but if they have other kids then they're still working and still have business running costs to bear in mind....I don't know any other buisness that would take a loss for a week just because someone wanted a holiday.

It does seem unfair for "your" family but for their business it's just the way it needs to work.
