Chip & PIN Security goes on Trial

The Chip and Pin technology are not as secure as the banks would like us to believe. I have had £300 withdrawn twice on my debit card somewhere in Romania - no I have never been there! This card was in my possession at all times and the PIN is in my head
Again how come the fraudsters managed to withdraw £600 in a single day when the max that can be withdrawn is £250? There is big black hole in that banks are trying to cover up and make customers liable because the banks do not want to update their technologies.
It is!
In your instance a counterfeit card was used. I take it the bank.credit card company didn't hold you liable as they could and you could prove the CHIP on your card wasn't read?!0 -

Interesting. What is the point in have the most secure lock put on the door when the window is weak enough for anyone to break into the house? End of the day, even if one assumes that the chip & pin is very very very secure, it is still possible to get the data of the mag strip, create duplicate card and go on a cash withdrawing spree!0 -
Abbey Customer Loses 10,000 GBP in Dispute Over Fraud.
(From The Times - 18 Jun 2009)
“Abbey are now saying that it was my card and PIN used during the transactions – but I have kept my card locked in my safe since October.”
Article click here.
Tip: If you're not going to use a card for cash transactions - make sure it's Chip & Signature.
Don't let them PIN the blame for disputed transactions on you.0 -
A spokesman for Abbey said: "Miss Woolf has admitted that she changed the PIN to a number that would also be known to others in her household."
However, Ms Woolf is adamant that she has never told anyone else her PIN and that no one else in her household could have known the number.
The Abbey spokesman continued: "The transactions all took place close to Ms Woolf’s house. The Chip and Pin system within the UK remains secure and has not been compromised. The transactions disputed by Ms Woolf were all made using the original card which was CHIP read with a valid PIN.
Not too different from Mr Job's case it would appear.Conjugating the verb 'to be":

I read with interest James that you have started a blog on what has been the most horrendous four months of my life.
I had the money in my Abbey account which I didn't use on a frequent basis. Abbey allowed an address change on my account (without my prior knowledge or consent) which has been covered up until this day and Abbey have made out that I am responsible for this.
I can assure you that at no time have I ever given my pin number to anyone. I have also been told that an old card was used - not the one I kept locked up.
For the last few months all I have had with Abbey is a constant battle. I warn anyone that has money with them to make the switch as soon as possible as when you may need it, it is unlikely to still be there.
The fraud systems that Abbey use are completely lacking and this unusal activity should have been flagged up.
I am hopeful that this nightmare will be over shortly - for both myself and family that have had to live through this.0 -
It's really disgusting what is happening to victims of fraud, and it's certainly not in the spirt of the Banking Code.
AT last he Consumers Association (WHICH?) have picked up on this. (click here).
Tip: Bin your PIN, then you won't be held liable for fraudulent transactions. Get yourself Chip & Signature Cards instead.0 -
Several years ago Abbey gave the option of having a picture on their debit cards. It could be any picture. I chose one of myself. There may be a good reason why this isn't standard for credit cards as an ID check. Obviously it would not affect trasnsactions at ATMs but could be used as extra security on other transactions. Maybe it is not regarded as cost effective if most fraud is at ATMs or on the internet. There's probably some blindingly obvious reason why it hasn't been implemented that I'm sure someone on here will tell me about

* Some famous person you clearly don't know.
Plus there's the 'passport regime' to prove it is who they say it is if it is to be a picture of the card-holder themselves.
What about second/third/fourth cardholders?
Nice idea but it wouldn't work/be too expensive either for the issuers or, more likely, all cardholders.
And bear in mind that the cases talked about in this thread have all been ATM withdrawals - something you already point out this would be useless for.Conjugating the verb 'to be":
