Fake SKY Phone Call

Options
Hello

Thought I had better post, just answered the phone and it was apparently SKY TV, Conversation went like this:-

ME: Hello?
SKY: Hello Mrs Berncastel Its Sky Tv here we just want to confirm the account holders name and deatils for your account and check your bank details are up to date
ME: I don't have a Sky Account
SKY: Deadline had hung up

Luckily I don't have SKY I only have freeview otherwise if I was a geniune customer I think I might have been fooled (especially with Eastenders on!)

Total Scam, never give any details out if you're coldcalled - or emailed.

You should contact your phone company and see if they can find out who the call was from.

Wow I hope they get the culprits. Good advice NOT to give your personnel details out willy nilly.

If they dont refer to you by name, then the odds are its a cold call...
    other classics are:

Caller: Hello, this is the bank(?)
    Consumer: Yes
Caller: Just a quick call regarding your account
    Consumer: Yes
Caller : Yes, we just need to verify you bank details, so if you could
confirm your sort code....your account number, and the name
as it appears on the account, just for our security records...

and the above isnt a word of a lie, I was at my grandparents when this call came in, and when I saw my dear granny shuffling for her cheque book, I was all 'hang on a second!!!' I took the handset off her and asked who was calling, to which they replied 'The Bank' and I asked how I could help, again they said the same above, to which I replied, if you're from the bank then 'Which Bank, and why dont you confirm to me the details YOU have!"
strabgely enough the line went dead after that.....

Golden rule, if someone wants to 'confirm' your details, ask them to read out to you what details they have....amazingly you might just find that the caller disappears...

And never give a password to someone who has called you.

Ask them to leave a note on your account and you will ring them back on a published telephone number.

I get so p*ssed off when I get called by the genuine thing (i.e. not a scammer) and they ask for me details. I really annoy them by saying "so, how do I know you are who you say you are? What details can you tell me to confirm your identity?" They always get really narked and start spouting data protection act etc and I tell them I'm not going to speak to them about anything til they can...oddly enough this usually ends up with me hanging up!

LOL - I've started doing the same. Someone called me the other day, asked for me by name (fair enough) and told me they were from my bank (also fair enough). Then before he could tell me any more he asked me to confirm my DOB (I think - one of the standard questions anyway) and I refused until he at least gave me a clue what the call was about (asked if it was selling me something etc) and all he would say is that it wasn't selling me things, but it was about other products / services they offer. Forgive me, but isn't that selling me stuff :rotfl:

In the end until he told me the nature of the call (not even specifics) I refused to verify any of my crucial, personal details - ending in a stalemate so we bid each other farewell :D

I had a very scary phone call from Sky ( the real mccoy this time ) quite late one night that went something like this ,

    ME : hello

Big scary sky man in strong / dodgy jamacan accent: hello, how are you, did you have a good day ?

    ME : huh ?

big scary sky man: how was your day, have you had a nice one?

ME : fine, who the hell are you ??

Big scary sky man: im blah blah blah from sky talk I was just being nice, I have some information about our lastest deals and offers to share with you.

    ME : ...............

At that point I hung up in an absolute rage, It honestly was like a moment off scream, if he had uttered a single word about movies i would have wet myself :rotfl:

I rang sky customer services who confirmed this was a genuine call and accepted that in future they would ask this cold caller to announce who they are BEFORE all the niceties

i get this ALL the time, the data protection act works both ways, they have YOUR info on their computers, if you call them then you need to confirm your details. however if they call you then if you have your bank details recorded on your pc or even just on paper then they need to confirm their details.

such misuse of the data protection act includeds selling private information when someone has opted out of passing on their info to other companies. i have never agreed for my information to be passed on so always inform which ever cold caller is trying to sell me something that they have breached the data protection act.

im also reasonably sure that banks are breaching the data protection act by diseminating your details to other ' branches' of the company. if you have a current account then how can their mortgage people contact you and try and sell you a mortgage without having got your details from the current account?

NEVER give out details of your account numbers and name to ANY company. telewest are right bu99ers at this, i always tell them either confirm who they are AND my account details or go away and do not recontact me.

they always reply " data protection blah blah, how do we know you are Mr brummybloke" i always say "well you phoned me, so how do i know you are who you say you are".

another thing is there is always a 1 or 2 second delay from telesales from when you answer the phone to when they speak, i say hello straight away, if no reply i put the phone down.

if a compeny repeatedly calls you you can report them to offcom or somewhere, the same as silent calls, this is when call centres phone automatically through to loads of numbers but there are not enough people in the call centre. they again should be reported if you get the number, they get fined loads of money.
