  • I have the same problem as you, neil4842. I don't even know the brand of the window as it was already here when I moved in (the previous owner didn't leave any details).
I have found a solution that works sometimes:

Try opening and closing the offending window/s a few times until the rubbber seal is flush with the frame. My windows are flush at the top, then gradually open up so that at the bottom there is a marked difference in the feel of the window when you run a finger down the gap.

I don't think a new rubber seal would help me, as they seem to be intact. I think there must be a way to re-align the part of the window that opens, so that it sits properly in the frame when it's closed. However, I am quite tight-fisted so I would rather stick gaffer tape over the crack than pay someone else to do it lol

Hope this helps.. let us know if you find a solution!

we dont have a gap but the wind whistles through making not so much of a draught but a really loud trumpeting noise which the double glazer said he could do nothing about. In fact he didn't believe it could be that bad until I rang him and put the phone up to the window! drives the kids mad the only solution is to freeze them and open the window. ho hum

I had a similar problem with my sons bedroom window. The rubber barely made contact with the frame to form an air tight seal. As we had only had the windows 2 yrs I called them out and it was fixed no problem at all. The window was adjusted by the fitter but it took him about an hour to do it.

There may be some simple adjustment on the locking mechanism. If you look along the edge of the portion of the window that opens there are usually a couple of 'pins' that slide when you open and close the window handle. These catch onto metal receivers in the frame and should pull the window tight closed. On some windows these pins are eccentric, so when you turn them (usually with an allen key) it will pull the window closed more or less depending which way you turn them. Try turning these 1/4 turn at a time in both directions to see if it helps. Also the receiver plates in the the actual frame may have some adjustment.

    Hope this helps !!

I had the same problem and had the fitters back last year.

They said the problem was because the runners need to be regularly oiled and most people didn't bother to do this. The problem with the window not shutting fully is because the window can not move all the way along the runners.

We tried this on one window and he did seem to work. We tried on another and it didn't work!

If the seals are old and stiff try spraying them with silicone spray, it should make them soften and swell a bit.
