itunes and lost library

Hello,
I was have problems with my laptop so i backed everthing on to my external hard drive then wiped it, reinstalled everything and downloaded the same version of itunes, deleted the itunes folders and inserted all the one's i had copied onto my external hard drive.
My music that is on my ipod is kept in one organised folder, this was put back to the same position (My Music).
Now when i start itunes all my songs, playlists, and play counts etc are there, so i thought it was a success, wrong!
If i try and play a song i get the exclamation mark, ie it cannot find the right path to the song, how can i repair this without finding each song individually as this would be near impossible as i have over 16000 songs?
Worst case senario would be to delete itunes library then add it again, this would lose all my play counts, playlists etc which i would like to avoid.
thanks

Right click on a file and choose Get Info. On the summary page at the bottom, it'll tell you where it thinks your iTunes library is:

OK, go into Preferences > Advanced, and then look at the iTunes Music folder location. This is where your iTunes music folder needs to be. Move it there and then restart iTunes.0
