I think annuals are a bit of a waste of money, so I'd go for hardy perennials. I like geraniums, they are cheap, hardy, don't need much watering and flower quite a lot well into the autumn. You might need to bring them in during Dec/Jan though as mine got killed off in the London snows this year.

If you are referring to the type of geranium (pelargonium) that has big colourful flowers they are not hardy and are easily killed by frost. The perennial geranium is a herbaceous plant that will live over winter in the border and can be split to make new clumps as they spread. If I had worked out how to do pictures I could show you the difference but it is easy to find the two types of plant on the Internet.

Annuals are only worth planting as seeds because they are expensive to buy as plants.

Some of them self-seed and end up sprouting in the most unusual places.

Others you can collect the seed of to sow again next year. They may not come true to type but you can get interesting results.

And if you don't have any space to bring your perennials in then move all the pots to a sheltered position and covered them with fleece jackets which you can buy at garden centres or online. My fuchsias and lilies survived the snow over winter because I did this and I live in London.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
