In Internet Explorer it's tools > internet options > (under the browsing history sub title) click delete > delete cookies
Thanks, I have done that.
Would also say that at my age I just can't take shocks like that, it really scared me.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Yeah I've herd of that before with the X, I've come accross that but the X was actually an image inside the pop up, the real X was still there like but it can fool you because it looked like 2 windows.
If in doubt close by crtl+shift+esc
On a fully patched system you will be OK though so long as you don;t click anything false.0 -
Some of them can exploit the browsers especially Internet explorer
even worse if you have a old java version.

Mmm yeah there seemes to be a big gap in security for home users when it comes to internet security (filtering pages for malicious stuff). However it would have planted a trojan if it used an exploit and that would have set mcafee off on one lol0

I have just been really frightened. I was on line looking at weather forecast sites and suddenly I get a warning that my PC is under threat, I am being attacked by Trojans and Worms and my personal data at risk. It was flashing up that there hundreds of these bugs in lots of my various files. It kept telling me to install something in order to save my PC, I nearly clicked on install, but then thought better of it. Trouble was I couldn't get rid of the thing off the screen, it just would not close. Eventually I just pulled the plug out to switch the computer off!
I then ran a full virus scan, but it hasn't picked up any viruses.
Ah, the old Scareware trick! It sounds like your PC has a security hole if it allowed a pop-up like this to occur.
First thing, I would not use Internet Explore as your browser. There are 2 much better alternatives, under the Mozilla family of browsers, namely Firefox 3 (very popular now,) and the lesser known SeaMonkey, which comes with an email client, and is the browser I use. It includes a junk-mail feature, which you can train to recognise spam. Both these browsers have much better built-in security than IE., eg they can block pop-ups, and they don't need frequent update security patches like IE habitually does because they were designed better in the first place.
In addition you should download this Hosts file to replace the one you already have on your PC (do a search to find it). That way a lot of bad sites or spyware will not be allowed to open and infect your machine, before even your browser and anti-spyware tries to deal with it..0 -
McAfee is part of your problem, it's not a good antivirus or anti-spyware program, as you will see if you scan the entries on this forum.
Suggest you delete it and install either Kaspersky (commercial program) or Avira (a free program). Either of these will give you much better protection. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Have you run the program Donnie posted? If not you REALLY need to do so now. Mcafee is absolutely awful at catching things of this nature and youd be foolish to entirely depend upton it.:idea:0

McAfee is indeed the worst "protection" for your average home user.
As recommended by Donnie, Malware Bytes is really good as is Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware. Get at least two of these on your system and do regular updates, immunises, scans and you should see issues like this dissapear!0
