Share Dealing For Kids ?

Hello,
This is my first post here, so hopefully I'm in the right place saying the right thing ! I've been scanning the web (including these forums), but can't find an answer to my questions.
My two children have reasonable lump sums sitting in building society accounts. I accept that this is a "safe" method of saving (anyone remember Northern Rock !), but I'm exploring other options that could provide a greater return for them.
One idea is to use their money to purchase shares.
I'm familiar (but by no means an expert) in buying/selling shares, but what I'm trying to find out is if there are any special considerations I need to bear in mind if we go down this route. (Maybe I should take the lack of available information as a sign!)
Can you provide reasoned judgment and data on any of the following ...
(a) Is this a reasonable option to consider ?
(b) Are there any specific trading organisations or accounts we should use ?
(c) Are there any specific tax considerations ?
(d) Anything else I may not have touched on above ?
Thanks for your time and I look forward to peoples views.
Pete.
