Re-installing Windows Media Player in Vista

Please help, HP replaced my motherboard due to a duff graphics/video card. Since its come back I keep getting a message to say that WMP is not installed properly please re-install. I've been on Microsoft and tried to add WMP 11 but it says a more up to date version is on my computer already and won't do it, I've tried to install the Vista patch and it won't do it (saying I don't need it). Looked on my programs and WMP isn't one that I can un-install and then go to Microsoft to get another WMP. What can I do please?

It has worked intermittently but two songs I downloaded from Nokia Music Store (which I played fine last night, copied to disc and ripped back onto the WMP so I could download it to my BlackBerry) worked fine before but again tonight it says WMP is not installed properly. I have tried shutting down and starting again but to no avail. The web help button just passes me back to WMP 11 for XP on Microsoft and my computer won't download it as it says I have a more up to date version on my computer.

Sorry if I sound slightly hysterical over this but music is a big part of my life and I want to listen to it whilst browsing.

Thanks for your time

Sorry, don't know how to fix the WMP problem, but there are other free media players that you could use instead.

For example VLC Media Player is Open Source (i.e. demonstrably free of malware) and plays almost all formats:

  • Done some research and it seems to be that it is not possible to uninstall it without hacking. I'd suggest you go back to HP and get them to fix it. You don't by any chance have the vista dvd where you could maybe repair the installation?

Thanks for the responses. Does the VLC Media Player automatically take your music library? Will my BlackBerry (and MP3 player) sync from it?

Unfortuantely I bought my computer from Comet so no there is no dvd. Am tempted to get rid of Vista altogether and install XP (for which we do have a dvd) but not sure of the ramifications of that (ie will I lose all my music etc). I hate bloody computers, nothing is ever simple with them (or I'm totally stupid - ok I'll stop there!!!)

    Thanks anyway
  • As far as I'm aware, that's the problem with going back to xp because I think it will have to be a clean install. i.e. wipe everything and start again!

Does the error message pop up randomly or just when you try to open media player? If it's just when you open media player, why not just get another player (I use iTunes, but there is others out there that i'm sure are just as good) and then set it as the default player?
