Internet Speeds

Not sure if this should be on the internet board or here, but it sounds more Techie to me!

Firstly, our broadband is with talktalk and my actual speed is around 130kilobytes per second. We were told at the start that we'd get up 8megabits per second (around 1 megabyte per second I think!) That has since been changed and now states that average speed will be 1.76megabits per second which is a bit faster than I'm getting, but not overly I suppose.

My actual question is that BT are supposedly rolling 21CN WBN out at my local Ballymena exchange. Will this make my broadband speed any quicker? Or will talktalk not give this to me?

By the looks of it '21CN WBN' means you will be able to get 24MB so maybe your speed will increase up to the 7/8MB... who knows you'll have to wait and see :p

You have other factors aswell like attenuation and what not

I assume it's via talktalk because the exchange has been unbundled and I think it's talktalk's own equipment. It's due to go live on the 31st of March 09, so looks like its delayed a bit!

But will that be for everyone, or just BT customers? Will talktalk hold back and charge extra?

If you're getting 1mbit on ADSL, you'll be lucky if that increases much with ADSL2+.

At the kind of line length you must have, ADSL2+ doesn't perform much better unfortunately.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • Some to sound unknowledgeable on this, but do I not already have ASDL2+?

That's my exchange details and I'm only about 3km away as the crow flies. Will this speed my line up or is there anything I can do?

Ultimately its up to the ISP, Talk Talk charge for a "Speed Boost" to upgrade the speed

you would have to call O2 to see what speed they can offer you, you thought about sky broadband or can you get cable broadband
  • No there's no cable in my area and I think sky wanted to supply phone line and sky TV, but we don't use sky TV so there wasn't any point in that! I'm an O2 mobile customer so I'd thought about the discount you see!
