There are numerous reasons for a low speed connection, distance from the exchange, quality of the cables entering your premisies, length of the cable from telephone point to router and from router to computer (if not wireless) and more.
What speed do Virgin quote? (very unlikely that you will receive full speed over a telephone line)
Your router is it ADSL2 if not higher speeds will not be available to you as I found out when AOL told me they were increasing my speed to 8mbs from 2mbs for free, my router being only ADSL couldn't handle more than 4mbs:rolleyes:Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -
length of telephone lead to router 3 feet, router to computer about the same, and 54 mpbs, netgear adsl /2 and exchange about half a mile and as for quality of wires all bt standard thanks think i will carry on with trying to speed it up0
