The credit reference agencies do not record credit card refusals, only credit checks. These drop off your file after 12 months, so the effect is short-lived.
Even then, credit checks are viewed as negative only if you attract too many in a short space of time.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
Moggles do credit checks take a full 12 months too drop off. Or are they veiwed as old say after 6 months or so??0

Credit checks can actually stay recorded on your report for up to 2 years (the legal maximum), though most will drop off after 12 months.
'Every time you apply for credit you will give the lender permission to search your credit report. Details of each search are kept on your report for up to 2 years (normally 1 year)'. Taken from Stoozing.com and also replicated on either the Experian or Equifax site from memory.
Only once out of dozens and dozens of searches over the years has one remained beyond 12 months on my file and that was because I disputed the purchase under the CCA and. It has since been removed as my complaint was upheld.0 -

They stay for 12 months - the legal maximum, contrary to the above post! However, you'll find most lenders disregard the period of 6mth and a day, so say you apply on 1st January, then by 2nd July you'd in effect have no searches as the majority of lenders look at the last 6months - not the full 12.
They can not stay on your file for longer than 1 year, if so then you simply complain to ICO who will enforce removal as a breach of the legislative DPA. It is not permitted to retain search data for longer than 1yr and all the main CRA's in the UK adhere to this rule. The only exception is for DCA searches which are classified as debt/trace searches and can stay for 6yrs aswith CRA regular data such as credit account data....2010 - year of the troll
