Unfair charge - what do you think i should do?

Hi,

I have a bank account with halifax that i left open with no money in with a view to putting some extra cash in it as and when available. The credit crunch hit and that never happened, however i also have a credit card with halifax that i had set the account balance to zero on and kept it just incase i ever needed it.
The problem being for some unknown reason halifax then took 28.56 from my bank account and credited my card with it.
Obviously this then made me go overdrawn, looking back through my statements this happended in august 2008, as the account and the credit card had no money in or on them i never bothered to check the online paperfree statements and halifax have charged me overdraft charges and interest over the past 8 months and are now saying they do not know why it was done, but they cannot do anything but give me my 28.56 credit back off my card and i would still have to pay the fees.
In my opinion this is very wrong and i am looking for advice on what i can do to avoid paying these.

Thankyou

Alex

I would suggest that you need to know why the money was transferred. Can you be certain that you never instructed for that money to be transferred? If so, then I would suggest writing to Halifax to inform them that you did not authorise that transfer of money, and you wish to request why that transfer occurred. They MUST have details of that transaction on their system, as part of their basic QA procedure. I would assume that you never got an answer before because you weren't talking to the correct person.

Until you know why the money was transferred, it's difficult to know what course of action to take.

Yes, i have proved that i never asked for the money to be transfered, i am going to go back to my branch and ask to speak to the manager this afternoon instead of one of the usual staff and see where i can get then, i have compliled my evidence so i will see what they say

    Thanks alot

Went in this morning and spoke to the manager, he agreed with me, a few clicks and a bit of typing later and the fees were no, he said i would stil be liable for the interest, a little argument later and i walked away not paying or owing a penny.
    Job done
