XP 3 user licence? Or separate?

Our family have 3 netbooks running Linux. We are all now considering installing XP instead.

Which is the most cost effective way to go about this please?

Assuming you're buying retail and not after some dodgy deal off Ebay, and you go for XP Home OEM licence, there doesn't seem to be much in it. Single licence seems to be around £70 and 3 PC licence £200, but you may find a better deal somewhere (this was Ebuyer). I'd probably pay the extra tenner just to get three sets of original media.

Presumably you all need an application that isn't available under Linux? Otherwise it seems a lot of money to convert 3 netbooks from wonderful Linux to horrid Windoze (ho ho ho....)

The difference between the 1 and 3 license packs is the 3 license pack includes Windows OPK which is used for manufacturer installations. It still contains 3 of the single "OEM" licenses including 3 installation discs.

I am not going to say this is completely untrue, but you can get some good deals on windows on ebay, I recently got a vista home premium OEM for £45 and it was all as it should be. You just have to watch what you are doing and if you have any doubts then don't do it.

Most cost effective way is to not go to XP but stick with Linux:

Quicker, cheaper, don't need loads of funny add-ons to fix daft problems Mr Gates should have avoided in the first place...

    Cheers!

Have you tried a different version of Linux like Ubuntu for netbooks.

No CD drives on netbooks so you will have to find another way to install an OS.

One of the netbooks is running Ubuntu at present.

I have a dvd/cd drive taken from an old pc which I've just asked on another thread if I can get some sort of enclosure and use it as an external drive. I also have links on how to install using a usb flash drive if necessary.

    Thanks for the help, all.

Most new Linux distributions come with the option to create a bootable USB device which can be used in the same was as a live CD or used to install onto the hard drive. Failing that, you could use unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) which will make a USB flash drive bootable with the chosen Linux variant installed and ready to use.

With regards to your drive you need a 5.25" external enclosure like this http://www.necables.co.uk/nec/index.php?target=products&product_id=29819
