How do I join two AVI files together

Hi
You can't just burn an avi file onto a dvd, it has to be encoded first, to create dvd files, then you can burn to dvd.
You need something like this, its an avi to dvd encoder

When all you want to do is stick 2 avis together you don't want to worry about why you do a 'direct stream copy' when you 'append' a file, or get confused when a message comes up saying your audio is skewed and needs to be resaved with a CBR.

Yeah, it's not exactly intuitive, and probably overkill for this task, but if you're likely to want to do quite a bit of video editing it might be worth taking the time to figure out.
