Frozen Veg Vs Fresh

    Peas are great, sweetcorn is good.

    I buy those little micro bags (with three types of veg in a micro bag), but they are not great & are quite expensive, but good for the work microwave.

    second above poster, all veg are less mushy steamed, we just have a stainless steel steamer used on the hob. And you can use the steaming water for gravy, thus retaining all the vitamins.
    We always have broccoli frozen now as MUCH cheaper, but it is slightly softer than fresh.

    where can you buy bags of sweetcorn from? i know ive seen them somewhere but cant remember where, is it farmfood, iceland or lidl? :) thanks

    I get them in the ordinary supermarket.

    We have
    *peas (when I'm feeling flush we buy them fresh and pop the pods ourselves in summer for a treat!)
    *green beans
    * sweetcorn (only found so far in Sainsburys)
    *peppers (only really seen this in Asda)

    My friend recently introduced me to frozen peppers and sweetcorn. With peppers especially we used to end up throwing them away, and they are very expensive to buy fresh. I think so far out of a bagful I have had from Asda I have made approx 8 meals spending the same I would have done on 3 fresh ones which wouldn't have gone anywhere near that amount of meals. I have only used them in cooking though, not for dips or cut up for lunch.
    Sweetcorn is the same, now I have had the frozen ones I can taste the "tinny" taste my friends disliked about tinned ones, and again, you get far more for your money.

    I have never had any sucess with cauliflower/broccoli and detest with a passion mixes of them together, tehy just end up both tasting the same. yuck!

    mushrooms are good for stews etc but too watery on their own. Frozen mango is brilliant, frozen cherries are not. I also buy or make frozen rice, and keep frozen onions in stock for those lazy days. Frozen petit pois are lovely but I have had some tough old peas when buying own brand cheapo ones. I froze some brown looking bananas and ate them half defrosted later they were nice. I buy bags of chargrilled mixed veg which is really handy to make a soup out of as a emergency meal. I microwave frozen cauliflower. I find all the frozen veg are very useful when doing a meal for one because I can pull out a small portion and not waste the rest. I try and buy the packs on offer or bogof and it is miles cheaper than buying fresh.

    where can you get cheap frozen fruit from? i wanted to stick with a £1 a bag but most of the frozen fruit are about £2-£3 a bag :(

    I buy frozen broccoli and microwave it for a couple of minutes. It doesn't turn to mush for me and keeps it looking green.

    I tried frozen peppers but tasted of water to me, and I use sweetcorn as someone said above works out cheaper than tinned.

    I get peas; sweetcorn; peppers; cauli; brocoli and carrots all from Heron. All of them are less than £1, i only use the carrots for soup and get fresh ones to eat.
    'Cos there's just me frozen is much better, the fresh stuff would go off.

    I have to be honest we buy all frozen vegetables. I'm really the only one who eats it up so it'd be no good to buy fresh and, besides, it's far cheaper. I buy frozen broccoli, peas/petit pois, sweetcorn, mixed vegetables, carrot and suede, baby carrots, err...can't think of anything else, but if it exists I've probably bought it. I steam them all on the hob and think they taste fantastic, I don't know. I like them with a bit of chew which is why I prefer steaming to boiling. I used to eat them boiled and I do remember they were quite tasteless. I eat all these vegetables on their own, by the way, not in recipes.

    I also buy fresh when on offer and freeze. Frozen kale is fine. Frozen mushrooms are great on pizzas. I also cook up a large batch of beans like chickpeas and kidney beans and freeze them, too, and they taste excellent. Bought them frozen before and they tasted good.
