Hi there,
I have a computer bought june 2000 gigabyte ga 71xe motherboard....700 athlon cpu (mesh computer model matrix 700 gdr)....what kind of motherboard kit do I need ...so that it fits the present case (mid-tower) if I decided to upgrade and any reccomendations for best place to get it from? I think the new motherboard would need about 5 pc1 slots.

Are you looking to upgrade other parts aswell? Just a motherboard upgrade isn't going to give you much perfomance boost, plus you will have trouble finding one for a processor that old

through a quick search it looks like your motherboard is an atx model so theoretically any new atx board will fit your case.
what are you trying to do though, if you're changing your motherboard and cpu it might be worth purchasing a new case as well (you can pick them up very cheap).
I tend to use ebuyer and aria for the parts I buy but other people here will be able to provide a few more suggestions.
My personal preference would be to go for a motherboard that also supports pci-e as this will ensure a certain degree of future proofing and an AMD 64 processor (939 socket).
If you just need to replace your motherboard make sure you know what socket the processor is ( i believe it's a socket A but I'm not too sure) and look at the sites I've mentioned and any others that are recommended for a replacement.0 -
That's what I was trying to get at because it wouldn't just be a new mobo and processor. It would need new RAM (becuase it's probably old PC100/133 SDRAM) and a new graphics card (he could probably still find a new AGP mobo, but wouldn't be worth it). Probably need new PSU too.maxamos wrote:what are you trying to do though, if you're changing your motherboard and cpu it might be worth purchasing a new case as well (you can pick them up very cheap).0 -

If you have got an agp card and don't want to fork out for a new card at the moment I'm using the ASRock dual motherboard (both agp and pci-e) and it's fast enough for me and allows plenty of overclocking.
Have to agree though it looks like you're probably better getting a new system and selling you're old one because you'll need new parts for almost everything.0 -
yep thanks for all replies. I want to change cpu and ram as well, so probably what I'm after is a motherboard kit. I wonder will the motherboards from such places as ebuyer be ok and will all the motherboard be able to screw onto my existing midi-tower case ok.
many thanks0 -
As maxamos says, any ATX mobo should fit into your case. They are all supposed to have the screws and ports at the back in the same place.0
