Losing stored passwords

I am sorry but I am really un-technical when it comes to computers, I have got myself in a mess installing and un-installing some programes today. I knew I had made a mess so did a system restore and thought I'll forget the whole thing. Anyway now all my stored passwords are lost and even though I have been in and re-logged to sites, everytime I leave and re-enter, my passwords are no longer stored.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
