Blinds

hi

had a quote from hillarys blinds this evening, was shocked at the price for kitchen roller blinds, i only need two and they arent fancy ones but will cost me £86 each if i went ahead. I also got a quote for vertical blinds for my living room and they came in at £247 (this is only three windows)

I've never bought blinds before but was shocked at the price, they will cost more than the curtains!

Any ideas where else i could go?

thanks

I can't recommend anyone in particular as I've not purchased any, but I am looking to buy some in the near future. If you google roller blinds or vertical blinds there are lots of companies that do them a lot cheaper than Hillarys. Most of them will send out samples too. I've had samples for venetian blinds from about three companies. If you find one you like, search on here to see whether anyone has anything good/bad to say about the company as I know one has been mentioned to avoid.

There's a seller on ebay that sells the exact same blinds as Hillary's, they're made in the same factory. Their name is justcontemp-ltd. I don't have any connection to them but I did buy replacement blinds from them and they were the exact same as the ones I got from Hilary's, they even had the same factory stickers on the header.

BTW, when I bought mine from Hilary's, about a year ago, I left it a while and they wrote to me offering me them at half the original quoted price. I phoned up and said I'd have them if they knocked another £20 off, which they did. They still weren't worth the price but they put them up which I wouldn't have been able to do myself.

Look in your yellow pages ./ Thomson as there;s bound to be a local blind manufacturer.

I had plain cream vertical for our dining room which is 3 windows also and paid £95 fitted if that's more a guide for you.
    Hillarys are extortionate!

    Hi,

I had excellent service from this firm just before Christmas, even though I was only ordering slats, so if you already have verticals, think about just changing the slats.

They will send you out samples, and you can work out cost before you order.

On one order they sent the wrong size, 5 inch instead of 3.5 inch, and replacemants were sent out same day after a quick email, no problems.

Thanks for that link Sconhead. I'm in the market for some blinds for the house we've just renovated and I'm off to read all about them now!

I used an Ebay shop called South Manchester Blinds. I have an enormous (over 2m square) window in my kitchen and needed a specially made blind. They sent me some fabric samples to choose from, and it was delivered only a few days after ordering. I think it was £50 - brilliant! I would have no hesitation in using them again, or recommending them.

Used these people on a number of occasions for my own and family members homes. Good service and cheap. Both links are for same company. I got discounts by attending the store and haggling a bit. I do work near there tho.

hillaries is a part of a major aluminium company with global partners. They use self employed agents usually man and wife teams. The prices are generally higher than average private companies. Rollers should be alloy tube not plastic, verticals should be washable fabric, watch out for 3 for £99 verts, as the fabric is a fibre pressed that is not washable and a bit like blotting paper. Agree that there are many small businessses and if they make the blinds themselves even better. ALL prices are based on fabric choice as well as size.
