OpenOffice is a false economy, esp if your in education.

I'd agree 100% - IMHO (which probably isn't worth a lot, since I'm an MCSE so probably biased) OpenOffice is OK for basic home-type office needs, but isn't a patch on MS Office. I find that most people that think it's as good as MS Office haven't used MS Office for a long time. OOo's UI is abysmal, it's inconsistent, it's pretty unstable and looks like a bad copy of Office 95.

But then it is free, so (as so often) you get what you pay for.

It's no real surprise when you look at how much of a mess the source for the programs is. The developers have a real need to do some fundamental reworking on how things have been done, but I guess they don't have the resources to do that and progress the featureset.
  • Just done a bit of hunting around and the cheapest current price I can find Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition (3 User Licence) for is £55.71 at good old Amazon UK. Retail seems to be £119.99, and it's almost a hundred quid at PC World.
  • Go for Open Office.

It is occasionaly a bit slow but does most things that Office does plus it is free.

The OP did specifically say "And I know there are free alternatives out there - I'm specifically after MS Office"
You clearly haven't read the forum T&C which state don't bother to read what the question was just reply to what you think it should have been.

I know you have said specifically that you want MS, but in my opinion, open office, which is free, is much better than MS office

OpenOffice, while being pretty good, is not better than MS Office.

If OpenOffice cost £200+ there isn't a single person in the entire world who would use it.

Next you'll be saying GIMP is better than Photoshop.

software4students have MS Office Entreprise Edition on offer for £35 until the end of the month. You can stick it on 2 PC's
