I wanna king size divan!

All,
I'm looking for a good deal on a good quality king size divan and mattress.
Argos have a Silentnight Mirapocket thing for £675, but I'm not convinced on Silentnight quality. I'd rather fork out an extra 20% or so for a bed and mattress that'll last 10 years, than have to replace it after 5.
I definitely want a pocket sprung mattress but without (or with a very thin) memory foam. I've read that mf mattresses are dangerous for infants (please also don't flame me on the perceived dangers of bed-sharing...!) and I can always get a topper in due course if I want one. I also find that firm mattresses tend to give me back-ache, compared to medium. Although that might just be my current knackered divan and cheapo Miracoil mattress...
One thing I am sure of is that Argos is NOT where I'm going to get the best deal, or even a particularly good quality bed!
So what's a good make, and how much should I expect to pay? Is it cheaper buying base and mattress separately?
Thanks for any advice!
J

Do a forum search in MSE on that brand (and the rest of the group).I definitely want a pocket sprung mattress but without (or with a very thin) memory foam. There is no point in having a very thin layer of memory foam, as you won't get any benefit from it. If you were to have memory foam then it should be between 2" and 2.5" deep, with a density of between 60 and 70kg per m3.
As long as you get a mattress that contains good quality British made memory foam, then memory foam is no problem for infants, they just aren't heavy enough to benefit from the memory foam.
If you do want memory foam then you are better off getting it already built into the mattress. Manufacturers put a huge amount of development into designing a new mattress, and making sure all the components work well together. Using a topper is like using a bolt on extra, they never really work the same.
If you want the mattress to last then don't go for a non turn one, as not turning a mattress (especially a pocket sprung one) will dramaticly reduce the life of the mattress. One thing I am sure of is that Argos is NOT where I'm going to get the best deal, or even a particularly good quality bed!

I'm not allowed to advise on brands or sellers, but you can get far more for your money by buying on line and choosing a bed from a smaller independent manufacturer.0 -
Thanks for the replies, what's the general consensus on Bed Kingdom as a supplier? Are their prices competitive?
Thanks0 -
I am following this as i am also looking for a king size mattress.after reading all the forum posts it seems i want a pocket sprung turnable mattress without memory foam(too warm). but other that that how do i differentiate between a good quality and bad quality mattress? does a deeper mattress mean better quality - how deep should it be? I dont think that more expensive means better quality all the time, so whats the sort of price i should be paying?
thanks for advice (sorry if i have butted in on your thread jim02)0 -

To start with stay away from the big brands, and the big chain stores. You will get far more for your money from smaller independent manufacturers. Their products are also more likely to be hand made, and have less gimmicks.
If you buy from someone with a satisfaction guarantee, and actually talk to them, then they are more likely to make sure you make the right choice the first time. However don't let them bully you into spending more than you want to.
Around 10" depth is about right for a good quality pocket sprung only mattress.0 -
just to get an idea of feel, so dreams, bensons beds and a small independent shop.Of course we were directed to the sleepeze and both liked luxor a pocket sprung 1200, orthapaedic grade 1 firmness! except all the way round the shop i had been muttering to my husband 'were not supposed to get a sealy or a sleepeze'.!and theyare charging£596 for it. bensons had a poor range the indepedent store showed us 2 mattresses from the same make , the one we liked had 800 pocket springs (on the double) don't know how many on a king, and was priced at £269this was a discount bed store and the bed make is sprungland. I've looked them up in this forum and on the net but can't find any info about them.anyone heard of them?0

I presume it was the Monarch that you were looking at? If so then it is their entry level pocket sprung mattress. It actually has 800 pocket springs in a king size (not the double). At £269 it is over priced (especially if it is supposed to be a discount bed store).0 -
