thanks for the replies. my concern as he has only just begun to look for work experience that he wouldn`t be able to do it time before the summer term ends if the crb took a while to come through.
    cheers

Don't rely on a CRB only taking 6 weeks - mine for the NHS took five months to come through. However some of this time was down to the NHS not asking me for all the right proof of ID.

I think it might take longer if you have lived in more than one area, as they have to contact each police force. When I was younger I was rather like the Littlest Hobo (cultural reference that will only make sense to some) and had clocked up 11 addresses in 5 years, thus my CRB check took an age. More recently I have reached the 'tomorrow' where I want to settle down, and have stayed in one police force area, thus the two checks I've had done in the past few years have taken relatively little time.

We regularly have work experience students in (I work in a primary school) as well as volunteer helpers. If long term then we do a CRB check but for short experiences it is fine without. The only restriction is that someone without a CRB cannot be left alone with children at any time. As it's the first experience this will not be an issue anyway.

I sort all the CRB's in the school I work at. Essex County Council are taking about 3-4 weeks to process them at the moment

if you are going to pay yourself get it done son as in sep they are going up to over £100 (so we heard at school) as police starting to charge the true cost.
best thing is to ring/email school and find out from the horses mouth.
  • Hi there,

I am teaching in a school at the moment and have found that the school has to do a risk assessment about the person helping before they come into the classroom. This is ok for the short time while waiting for the crb. Talk to the school and see it they can do something like this. It should help him to get into the school without having to wait for too long for the crb

As mentioned above your son can not apply for the check himself

Click on the link and read the gov blurb.

Also you need a different check within each place of work. I have friends who have a few separate checks as it only covers you for one place of work. So a one from Uni would not cover him unless the Uni had organised the work experience. I doubt your son would need it but the school where he is working would know best.

    Hope you get sorted

This is quite true, I, along, with other another teacher, was doing scout voluntary work and we each needed a CRB check for scouts despite having a current one for school...
and The Scout Association had to pay for this AFAIK - what a waste of money - could have been used for something else.
Supply teachers are CRB checked by their agencies BTW ...

A school CAN get a 'VERBAL' check BTW (over the phone) - think it's called List 99 but don't quote me on that!

The university should be arranging this - mine did!
