Lost Sound Icon

don't know if you can help.
I have lost the sound icon which should appear in the system tray.
I have a newish monitor and used to control sound bu using the icon to mute sound or adjust volume.

I discovered, the other day, that there are buttons on the left hand side of the monitor too.
I had a go with them and they worked but then the icon dissappeared altogether.

I can adjust my volume via a + and- feature on my monitor but I would like the icon back.
I have tried all of the advice that microsoft has on their windows site including inserting the cd and following out to copy a file from it back on to the hard drive.

I have also done the things that kellys korner website advised but no luck.
Is there a pc wiz out there who can help.
It isn't crucial but IS very irritating.

    You don't say whether you're on XP/Vista/Other !?

    In XP -
Go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices.
On the Volume tab put a tick in the 'Place volume icon in the taskbar' and click Apply.
If the tick is already there untick it and click Apply then retick and click Apply again.

    In Vista -
Right click on the taskbar and select 'Properties'.
On the Notification Area tab. Tick the Volume box and click on OK. (As above, if it's already ticked - untick and Apply then retick and Apply)

thanks for you efforts - tried that first - It returns an error which says tht sound controls are not installed and to go to add/remove programmes to install it - went to windows help - that gave me the option to install missing files from my windows xp cd - did that - still no icon, hence my request for help.
