The disk from the older computer will be set up for the devices on that old computer and will not have all the correct drivers etc for the new computer.

You should do a full install from scratch on the new computer with the new disk.

You can then set it up to replicate the older computer.

There is some software that will do that for you automatically but I can't recall what it is called.

Hopefully someone elses knows and will post details.
  • Files and settings transfer wizard. Runs in windows or from the CD in older versions of Windows. Also called User State Migration Tool.

Or buy a USB to IDE adaptor from Amazon

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet-2-5-Inch-3-5-Inch-5-25-Inch-Adapter/dp/B000Q5YW76/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240959231&sr=8-12

You'll then only have to remove the HD from your old computer as opposed to having to install it in the new one also.

Works a treat for transferring your data off an old HD onto a new one.
