Painting stack pipes - plastic and cast iron

We have both plastic and old cast iron pieces of stack pipe going into each other. We can't remove the old cast iron as that's the bottom bit which goes into the ground and it's been tarmacced round as it's a public footpath.
We've recently had the outside renderinging painted with Dulux Weathershield and the painter also used this on the pipes.
The old cast iron bit has what appears to be rust marks showing through already. Is there any way to treat this as I don't expect it will be too long before it looks a right mess!

you need to scrape/grind/sand it all off down to bare/ish metal and then prime it with hammerite paint or similar.
either paint the whole pipe black, or use color of your choice over the hammerite. (use oil based paint only).Get some gorm.0 -
Remove any rust either scrape it off with a wire brush or use a product called Kurust (Hammerite do it). Then use either the desired paint hopefully the old paint you may still have or you will have to repaint the whole pipe with gloss paint or use Hammerite as mentioned above or Ronseal also do a simialr paint that can paint on over rust
Painter should have removed the rust first0 -

Thanks Ormus. Do we use the same oil based paint on the plastic part as well? Sorry if it's a daft question, I don't know anything about painting outside and one of the builders doing our renovation did it as a favour when painting the rendering to make it all look the same.0 -
Painter should have removed the rust first
Yeah, a proper painter/decorator would have but this was one of the builders doing us a favour! Doesn't always work out for the best!
Thanks for the info about the paint. You and Ormus obviously know a lot more than the builder :rotfl: .0 -
Yes you can use same paint for both must be oil based paint
I did mine a couple of months back, I didnt repaint the whole stack (just like yours goes into ground from roof/toilet) just removed oil rust with kurust and paint over with a couple of coats.

You just paint it on with a small brush (its water based rust killer) rust turns black. I used it on house and car
Halfords sell it0 -
Thanks again Savemoney. I'm sure we'll be able to get the colour mixed up being Dulux.0
