Buyer complaint

A buyer has bought an item from me, and is complaining it is defective (even though i know it's not!) and has asked for a replacement (i can't provide as i'm a private seller and only had the 1!)
I'm happy for him to return for a refund, but how do i go on about telling him to do so? should i ask him to open a paypal dispute or would that be weird?? I just feel it would be safer to do so that way? if that makes sense?
Please advise! Thanks

Don't know about getting him to open a Paypal dispute, but I'd just say something along the lines of:
I am a private seller and not a business, therefore I regret that I am unable to replace your item as I only had one in the first place. However, I invite you to return it to me for a full refund. etc etc etc0 -
Just make sure you get the item back before you provide the refund.0

I really have no idea what to do, I did email and ask for him to open a dispute to keep it official He wants to try to repair it and if it can't be fixed send it back??? I personally sniff scam here, as he says he has another with same fault himself!! My fella seems to trust the story though. quote from buyer
'and if so I can fix it. If not then I will return it to you. If that is ok by you then I might not need to return it. I will let you know by Friday at the latest. my regards'
I'm thinking i should just ask to tell him to return it as is, a shop wouldn't take back an item that has been tampered with would it? Please advise!

Stay firm, email immediately and say that you will only take the item back as it is. If buyer wants to take it apart (or whatever) you cannot authorise that and will not be able to offer a refund if that occurs.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Be very clear that if they tamper / try to fix, then you will not accept the return.
You would probably not then be able to re-sell the item yourself.0 -

Thanks i'm replying with 'I only suggested opening a dispute to keep it official. i've never had a buyer unhappy with an item that i've sold before, and if i've ever returned an item i've always done it through paypal! As i said, the last time i used it i had no problems at all with it, but as our console recently broke we sold the games and accessories on ebay. Sorry but i can only take the item back as it is. If you want to take it apart (or whatever) i cannot authorise that and will not be able to offer a refund if that occurs. Please let me know ASAP as i'm getting married on Friday and will not be online over the weekend.'
Hope that's ok and he doesnt just go ahead and open it up and then open a dispute and win anyway grr me and my big mouth suggesting he opens a claim to send it back... It's only when he said he has another faulty one himself that alarm bells starting ringing...Incase he puts the faulty insides from his in my working one and then sends me back the dud!!If google doesn't know it, how should i?0 -
Pfft! This item has been on ebay twice now...the first buyer didnt pay and tried to haggle until i ended up trying to cancel the transaction and the buyer declined...so i paid the fees on that!! Now the guy who got it by second chance offer is claiming it is faulty, when it is not!! :mad:Be very clear that if they tamper / try to fix, then you will not accept the return.

What is the item? (if you dont mind me asking) Do you think its easy to repair etc? Did you check it was still working when you sold it?Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.0

Xbox 360 control pad, and it was fully working with our console the week before i listed it lol, but the console got red ring of death so we sold the accessories on ebay - Including 1 more pad of a different colour, several games and even the power pack. (and the faulty xbox too in bits lol). Buyer says - Oh by the way I have a similar fault with one of my own controllers and took yours along with mine to a gamestation shop and they told me that it was possibly as a result of being dropped that the bumper is faulty and that the rubber slips out of position'

Sounds like its not a common problem from what ive seen. Be careful. Hopefully he won't open it or just send you back his faulty one.
And, personally, if i was the buyer, i'd just send it back for a refund, not try to fix it.
I hate that some people do this and makes you unable to trust anyone else.
Oh and congrats on your wedding on friday :beer:Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.0
