What receipt of payment method is best?

I am sure there isn't one really, but what are your views?

I have just sold an item for £45 on ebay and have lost over £5 on ebay and paypal fees.

Personally when I buy off ebay, I tend to use Paypal to pay as it is so easy, but having been a seller the fees seem high.

Is it safe to give out bank details for a direct transfer rather than using Paypal?

What other methods are there?

Thanks
Angela.

A lot of people have different opinions! I use paypal a lot. When you write a cheque your bank details are on it so you are just giving the same details doing a bank transfer.

I personally don't accept cheques as you have to wait for it to arrive, then you have to traipse down to the bank, then you have to wait 5 days for the cheque to clear, and then for some reason, 10 days after the listing when you send the item the feedback from seller always seems to be: delivery slow etc!!! For some reason people just don't get that it is their fault for paying by cheque.

I prefer paypal despite the fees, it is so much less hassle and sooo much quicker. Direct bank transfer is ok, but I have to say that it is scarey as a buyer doing that as there is no protection, so if someone offers to do a bank transfer, keep in good contact with them or they will think you have stolen their money.

I also accept postal orders and find them good, you don't get charged paypal fees and you don't have to wait for them to clear.

Just build in the fees to your listing start prices and you should be OK - say you expect something to go for £50 then maybe start the bidding at £34.99 instead of the £29.99 that will give you your money back.

As long as you keep it out of the shipping charge then all should be OK - note its a shipping charge not just postage

Paypal is fine as long as you withdraw everything regularly to avoid accounts lockups when some idiot uses their stolen cc number. I keep a separate paypal account on "hot standby" to avoid this problem.

Thank you all for your comments.

Mrwibble, could I ask why you need to keep it out of the shipping charge? Is there some rule against that?

Is there a "rule" as to how much you can put onto a shipping charge to cover packing?

    Thanks
    Angela.

There is no real rule in my view how much you charge for delivery though some ppl may be put off from buying if you charge excessive for delivery.

I would go with with paypal (just go ahead and cover your costs via delivery) and bank transfers( only have to wait a few days but will need to have a good feeback for ppl to trust you).

No one is really interested in nochex whilst cheques and postal orders can be a hassle since there is a tendency for them to get lost or delayed in post and all the uncertainty can lead to buyers thinking you trying to con them especially if you dont keep them updated with the progress of there purchase.

As a buyer: Paypal. As seller: Bank transfer; no charges involved and no chnace of anyone later trying it on with a paypal chargeback

yes you can if you use seprate email accounts but be warned there is a possibility they can put both your paypal accounts on hold and ask you to confirm your ebay transactions and if they orginate from the same ebay account they will know both paypal accounts are being used by the same person and possibly put it on there records for future purposes..
