Comptia A+

I was thinking about taking this course. Can anyone recommend it? Anyone know how long the course is?

Depends what you're planning to do with it. Do you have any IT background? What type of work are you looking to get?

10+ yrs in IT so I'm happy to help with any advice...

Hi, my Dad is thinking about doing this. He has been looking at 'mentored' course from places like seek learning - does anyone have any experience with these sorts of companies? http://www.seeklearning.co.uk/comptia-training.asp

Generally I'd say that the A+ is worthwhile in two cases:

    1) You don't have any working experience in IT Tech Support and are looking to move into the field
    2) Your employer is paying for it

Otherwise, most hiring managers would take 1 or 2 years hands on experience over the A+ certification. Although it is nice to have, I haven't really seen that it is in that much demand.

Remember that it isn't always techincal skills that will get you the job - many times an employer will be happy to take on someone who has less technical certifications, but has good customer service skills - at least it worked for me when I was starting out :)

I passed my A+ a few years back.

I don't think there is need for any course though, I bought a book and taught myself from that, Paid £180 for the exam myself and passed. If you have any experience with IT then you shouldn't need to pay for a course, It really isn't that hard.

There are plenty of internet resources to teach yourself, But I would definitely say its worth it.

    Good Luck

After a while where the CompTIA certs fell out of favour with employers they are now seen as a very worthwhile endeavour. And the A+ is a great starting point for anyone interested in working in IT. So it's very much worth the effort.

Bear in mind that a new version of the A+ (and the Network+) is due to be released at the end of June, so you would be better placed to wait until it comes out before doing the course.

    Good luck.
