Help NTL modem obtaining IP address problem.

Hi guys
friend of mine has NTL broadband, with a naff modem, his modem says 'obtaining IP address' but wont connect to the internet, whats he doing wrong.
Is it a program stopping it, or just a naff modem, or something else, he's not very techi minded.
this happened before but when he unplugged it and plugged it back in it sorted itself out, now it wont, any suggestion, thanks

Has he paid his bill?

Has it been going on for a while or only this evening? It could be that they are doing some maintenance or something. Is he with Virgin Media? Is it a cable modem? If it is I would suggest posting a message on their newsgroup support as they are usually quite good.

been on and off since he got his new pc, techi guy at NTL said pc wasn't set up right, but then everything has been working ok for about 3 weeks then nothing tonight, just says its obtaining IP address.

can you give me the link for the newsgroup please.

If it's a modem, first thing I'd do is to uninstall and reinstall the software/driver for it...other than that, maybe a TCP Stack reset ??

I'd use ethernet if it's usb he's using just now. Bypasses the need for any drivers.

My mate had this problem with his Virgin Media broadband connection.

They first said it was a faulty modem so sent him a new one, then the new one had the same fault...

It turned out to be a problem at Virgins end - when you first connect they have to register and activate the MAC address (cant remember if its the modem or PC..) and one of their 'operatives' hadn't done it properly.

There then ensued 6 weeks of trying to convince Virgin they had made a mistake, they admitted it in the end, but by god it was painful!

Don't know about the newsgroup, but I'd pop over HERE and post the question to them, usually able to assist with such matters
but get the modem model number 1st - give them something to go on !

Thanks everyone, he is in spain at the mo, but as soon as he comes back, I will tell him to ring them up and one sort out the IP thing, as its ever since he got his new system, so sounds like it could be that, and also ask them for a new wireless router!
As they are giving them away to new customers now.

I did find out on another forum that the modems don't mix with xp very well.
But thanks anyway.
