can't remove Control Panel 2nd set of shortcuts after a restore

Hi
Rolled the system back a second time, further back, and message said no changes had been made, but there were 2nd shortcuts for most items on start menu, including most of Control Panel's menu being doubled up too. I've deleted all but the Control Panel ones, as the only options when I right-click are open/create shortcut/sort by name.
Instead of menu view, changed back to clicking to open the Control Panel folder, but can't see in there, or in Explorer, or in TuneUp Utilities, where it's possible to delete these 2nd shortcuts! Message keeps coming up that not enough room to display all menus.
Many thanks, Cat

Sound messy... Assuming that you are free of viruses etc.., you could try tweakui, to see if they are listed twice there, and untick them if that is the case.

there is some info here:

What is the history to this problem, why are you rolling back in the first place?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Hi albertross
Thanks for your message and links. I'd installed ntl broadband medic and been a bit unsure of some of the firewall messages, and googled about medic, and found posts saying that although it's a good programme, it can act as a server and possibly be a security risk, or something like that ... that it could potentially let in other things due to acting as a server.
Can't recall exactly, but decided to uninstall it, and did first rollback. But then realised had forgotten about the winqualifier it installs first, so rolled back again, to the day before. And Restore reported no changes made, but had doubled up shortcuts. Thankfully no viruses. Will try tweakui in the morning, and read the info too, and see if can zap these extra shortcuts!
Many thanks, Cat0 -

Hi albertross
Thanks again for the link, as it was easy to uncheck the extra shortcuts being shown in Control Panel, plus have just seen Ian's post and done a *.cpl search, and the offending extras are now gone as well as hidden! I'd not have thought of Tweakui at all, so thanks again. Useful for lots of things.

Search for files with .cpl extension - my guess would be that you have twice as many of these as you need. They will probably be named display.cpl and display[1].cpl again at a guess. Let me know whats in there.
Hi Ian
Many thanks for message. Did the search and the extra ones came up as [2]s. Deleted them (hoping this doesn't mean there's a set of [1]s hidden somewhere!). Checked back in Tweakui before emptying recycle bin and none of the extra one's I'd unchecked are there now, so problem doubly solved. :T
Thanks, Cat0 -
Careful using tweakui, its very powerful and can totaly mess up a system just by installing it.
I installed it years back and it killed my operating system. Never used it since

Ian_Griffiths wrote:[1], [2] etc. is just Windows way of avoiding calling things the same name, so you probably had three sets at some point looking at that.
No matter!
Glad you got sorted. :T
Thanks again for advice. :beer:0 -

Hi T4i
Thanks for message. It's reminded me even more strongly to never ever click on anything I don't understand ... first restore a few weeks ago was because of overzealous registry-cleaning with a tweak program (not Tweakui) and had to format and reinstall! Sorry to hear what happened with your system.
