Some of the latest new cars don't come with a spare at all. The new Honda Jazz comes to mind. You just get a can of compressed air and gel.

... or worse - run flat tyres.

Two years ago on a Sunday on a weekend away to Ardnamurchan we hit a stone at the side of the road. Called the the helpline and had a long discussion:-

I have flat 2" long gash and no spare......

But your car has a spare (methinks no it doesn't but better recheck, frantically rips the boot space apart))

    Nope definitely not

    Yes you car does

    Nope

OK sir I will send someone out to show you where it is (with that tone that suggested I was a total numpty)

At this point I asked her where she was and was told Surrey. I pointed out that we were at least 4 hours away from any sizeable town on single track roads and that this was a bit pointless.

Fortunately the recovery guy called me before he left and asked what the problem was and my tyre size etc. He immediately said no chance to the tyre (300C) but arrived with a courtesy car so all was well but it took me two days to find a tyre and ended up buying a wheel and tyre from the dealer for £100 who had taken it of a new delivery.

Not unlike the situation run flat tyres land you in. Get a puncture, even a 2 inch long cut and you can keep driving for around 50 to 150 miles depending on how heavily loaded the car is at a max. speed of 50mph. Sounds great, what are the catches?

Is 50-150 miles far enough to find a replacement run flat tyre when only the larger tyre centres carry them in stock? Answer - no, sometimes a lead times of days or weeks if supplies have run short.
There are cases where people only get a few miles before the tyre shreds and you have to stop.
Rear puncture no problem to keep driving, front wheel puncture and the car is damn near impossible to steer, call out the breakdown service.
And you have no spare wheel and no where to store one.
And the stiff sidewall tyres present you with all manner of odd dynamic effects on anything but smooth unrutted roads and warm weather.
It's a technology that sounds great in theory but in practice is totally .... poo.
... which is how I ended up using Ultraseal/Puncturesafe and non-run flat tyres on my car for a while.

Your car has wheels which have a 45 or so offset and are PCS 5 x 114.3 center bore is 67.1

    So the best choices are
    Kia Ceed/Proceed
    Chrysler Voyager /Grand Voyager
    Honda Legend
Mazda 323 2l V6 94>, 626 92>, 929, Xedos 6, Xedos 9 the center bore is 0.1mm to small but thats nothing realy rust can deal with that much

Other wheels could be made to fit the center bore size is the problem wheels could be made bigger to fit but thats not direct fit realy
  • I just picked up my i30 yesterday.
It's a CDRi 1.6 Comfort. Seems they now come with a full size spare!

The road tax is down to £35 too, which is really pleasing!
