How long does a washing machine last?

I've had my washer/dryer for a little over 4 years.
Last week it decided to fill up completely and pretend to me it had no water in. So when I opened it the whole lot just went EVERYWHERE!!! As it had completely filled up it didn't look like any water was in as there wasn't a 'water line' in the window.
After some moving about and examining, it appears to be a fault with the cold water valve on the machine.
I can use the machine but only when I'm in the house as I need to turn off the water valve after it has done a wash as it doesn't stop filling up. It takes a good 15hours to fill up completely so I just do a wash and turn the valve off.
Anyway, I would need to get someone in to fix this, but I'm concerned it may be on it's way out anyway. Other thanthis fault I haven't had any other problems.
Just wondered how long the lifetime of a washer tends to be?

Most modern ones seem built to last about 8 years approx. I don't know where you live but around here a simple-ish repair will cost £20-£50, a LOT cheaper than a new washer! Good luck.0

Many last 10 years BUT perhaps not used every day.
Mine is nearly ten years, Zanussi cost £550 and is only used twice a week at the most.
I think my father had scale in his water sensor/switch and cured it himself. Can't remember the word0 -
A lot of people claim that washer dryers don't last as long as washing machines. My last washer dryer was about 12yrs old when it died.
I think it depends on make, some are a lot more dependable than others & have good reputations, some are best avoided from what you hear.
There have been a few posts on the best/most reliable washer dryers recently & a search should bring them up for you.The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Normally a washer and seperate dryer are more reliable than a combined machine, but there are exceptions.
My last washng machine lasted 15 years and had the motor brushes replaced about 4 times. The tumble dryer is now in it's 18th year and still going strong, both were hotpoint.
It does depend on use as well, I only use mine two or three times a week. If you have a large family and are using it every day it will not last as long.0 -
We've had our current, Bosch, washer about 15 years and it has not required any repairs so far.
Our dryer is about 30 years old.0 -
Old washing machine died after 13 years, one repair to door seal after 3 years.
Tumble dryer just turned 13, new heating element replaced last year. From ebay £24 easy diy job0 -
we seem to be getting an average of 7 yrs per indesit machine.
at an average price of approx 200 quid its not a bad deal.
i would never have a repair costing more than 100 quid, when you can buy machines for 170/180 quid now.
washer dryers certainly seem to be more unreliable. mainly with dryer heating element problems.Get some gorm.0 -
19 years old Servis washing machine still going strong."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

My washing machine is has given 23 years good service.
It is also hand with the iron, but the frying pan, what can I say0 -
my hotpoint washer drier is 5 years and 2 months old and yesterday, completely stopped working. The door was openable so I put my hand in and took out the few clothes in there. It was set at 30 and the water was almost boiling. Reading reviews on the net about this particular machine, I decided to not go down the repair route and have spent my money on a john lewis washing machine (no drier) with a 5 tear guarantee. A neighbour`s machine broke down in a similar fashion 3 days ago and it is exactly the same age and model, as the builder put them in all the new houses and flats here0
