claim free property and land in the uk

sounds well dodgy to me but just thought I'd ask if anyone has had first hand experience, some guys claim to be able to show you how to claim free land and even properties in the uk examples are johansson, eglington e.t.c, is there any truth in this or is it as it sounds just a scam :j

Technically its correct, adverse possession means if you occupy land for 10/12 years then its yours but its hardly a get rich quick scheme!

There's an online Land Registry guide to adverse possession - HERE.

Basically it explains that these ads are often misleading and basically a con. But think about it - if someone knew how to get this land easily for nothing, why would they sell "the secret" to you?

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

as far as im aware this is only the case where the actual owner is not known or the land is not registered.

so, check with the land registry. If noone is registered, purt a fence around the property, after 12 years its yours.
  • I thought that people had been claiming free property and land legally for years since the Thatcher years.

It doesn't take anything like 10-12 years either. They see a house, claim the house for free as their own, live in it a short while, put a small monetary surety on it and then sell it for thousands of pounds of profit a short time later.

In other words Right to Buy!
  • I have lurked on this website for a while now and have posted on some threads occasionally. It is nice to know that there are a lot of generous and altruistic posters on this site who are willing to share their knowledge and skill about money saving and income generating ideas.

However, I am becoming disappointed by threads like this one which seem to reflect an ethos held by some posters who simply want to make money by taking what is not theirs to take in the first place.

I hope that they don't take over moneysavingexpert, com! Long live altruism!

Found this bit of info, when researching a related matter

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the acquisition of land by adverse possession under the Land Registration Act 1925 is in breach of Article 1 of Protocol 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights (entitlement to peaceful enjoyment of possessions).

J A Pye (Oxford) Ltd v United Kingdom, 15 November 2005 (European Court of Human Rights).

I live in a victorian mill town and there's a big problem around here where the owners of land are not known. A lot of this land is uncared for and causes legal problems for developers, so local people are now claiming this land and looking after it. In another 10 years we'll be able to claim the freehold to our property as the freeholders can't be traced and no ground rent has been collected since the sixties.
