this might sound a little silly,
do you have youngish child you know who might have lego bricks....... you could then plan out the type of door setp you want.......
told you it was silly, but i have done it myself and i class myslef as an acomplished DIY'er

when i had my doorstep built, (by BIL)
he didnt really know what to do,
any way he built a rectangular shape wide enough for the flag stones to sit on, then he filled the middle bit with !!!!!! and concrete, therefore making it almost solidsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

you could build a rectangle with another line of bricks across the middle and then fill with !!!!!! and concrete
depends how big the flag stones are
if you fill with enough concrete you should be able to lay the flag stones straight on top......
at the end of the day , as long as you have solid concrete covered !!!!!! underneath then you should be ok.smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

make sure to lay a foundation or the whole thing will sink when it rains, and be sure that the bricks are level and the flags fixed with mortar or you will have wobbly flags.Don't ask me, Im SKINT0
