Motherboard and cpu Cache size?

I have recently purchased a second hand Motherboard, although i dont have a manual for it.
The spec states it will support xeon cpus at 400mhz bus rate, and the board has a level 2 cache of 256k.
will my board support the cpus with a 512k or 1mb cache? or does it need to be the same size as the motherboards level 2 cache?
