Halifax Bank Charge Reclaim! Advice Needed Please!

Hi all,
Last week i put in a claim for bank charges with the halifax for the last 6 years totalling £1,326 with interest. I got a letter last week to say that the bank were looking into my case, which could take upto 4 weeks. However, in the post this morning, i received an offer of just £35 pounds because i've stressed i am in financial hardship.
It also says that they will cancel any fees incurred by myself in the 3 months after the date i accept their offer of this £35. It also says that the offer is made without admission of liability and to allow me time to better order my outgoings so they closely follow the regular credits made to my account.
I am a single parent to 2 children aged 11 and 10 months, not working at the moment so in receipt of full benefits and am struggling incredibly just meeting my regular household bills, all of which are in arrears.
Can anyone help by advising what steps i should take now...to be perfectly honest i feel like the bank are just taking the mick!! I have just opened another bank account with the yorkshire bank, which i shall be using from next month so will no longer be using the halifax.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If you stressed you were in financial hardship this may be an offer of goodwill, have you been unemployed for the past six years? Legal challenges against charges are on hold at the moment, if Halifax have offered you goodwill then it will be purely based on your recent financial hardship. If you are really struggling then I would go to debt advisory agency like ThinkMoney for free advice - although be warned they may try to sell financial products. Reclaiming your charges may help but ultimately you have to take responsibility for your finances, and from what you've described you're not fully in control, so I would seek help.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0

Suspending the charges is a good step. I would probably look at negotiating that £35 on the basis that you have arrears higher than that. If you can photocopy any proofs of arrears on priority debts and any non priority debts that are threatening court action. Then work out the difference between the arrears and the amount offered. I would write to them and ask them to reconsider the amount on that basis alone.0 -

With ref to your utilities, i am with British Gas and they have a trust fund to which you can apply to reduce your debt both gas and electric but you have to be with BG to get it. I did see some other gas/electric companies doing the same, i belive severn trent water do the same, maybe its worth your while having a look, you never know your luck0 -
