Selling Books?

Options
Hi all

Does anyone have any ideas for getting rid of books and making a small amount of money from it? I have a lot of books that i bought previously (I'm a member of the library now, so I read for free:cool:).

Ebay is my only real idea, but there are a lot of books, not sure I can cope with that many listings, and that many trips to the post office

any ideas welcomed

Thanks

Josephine

In the Ebay forum there are several long threads about selling books on Amazon and also Play.com. If you did go down the route of selling them that way.

Whereabouts are you based? There's a guy on our local market who buys books and then sells them on, I always take about 20 down and get swapsies but I know he gives a fairly good price.

  • Amazon's pretty good as you don't pay a fee until it sells, also they stay listed for (I think) 90 days. Downside is that Amazon set the postage fee you get and it may not cover the cost so be careful.

Don't discount the idea of a car boot sale. Books just in a jumble in a box are difficult to sell, but the booters who put the books in categories and display them well can obtain a premium price.

Have you thought about selling them in lots on ebay? Maybe put them together in groups of 10 - say a lot of 10 mysterys, or a lot of 10 chick lits? People are more likely to bid when they think they are getting a bargain. Also a good tip when selling at carboot sales.
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...

eBay and Amazon are the ones that come to mind.

Amazon is much easier to set up the listing, but bear in mind the postage fee is set by Amazon, not you, so works better for the lighter books, or those that sell for higher prices where you can absorb the postage. Listings remain active for 90 days, and Amazon handle receiving the payments from buyers, deduct their cut, and pay the balance to you.

eBay is more flexible regarding postage and packing, so you can't lose out there with the heavier books. Listings are for a max 10 days last time I looked, but you have to handle the payments yourself (paypal take a fee, so cutting your profit margin, cheques and postal orders involve travelling to the nearest bank or PO to get the cash, so petrol money eats into your profit again.

Just a few pointers, not the full story on either portal.

Sales are slow on Green Met but its a simple site to use and very quick to list on there. Its the best site for the sale of fiction books I have found
