Speed Thru Wireless Router

If i get a "54 Mbs" wirelss router, and my incoming speed is 10Mb, does this mean i can run in theory, 5 computers at once, or what, thanks.

You can run 253 computers from your router, the two figures aren't really connected.

The 10mb/sec is the speed at which data is delivered from the internet to your house. The 54mb/sec is the speed at which internal traffic is transferred around your network.

you can in theory run 254, but each one will share the 10Mb bandwidth

Why couldn't you run more than 259?

Because (without putting in some real work around DHCP) the default subnet will only deal with 254 IP allocations, one of those being the router itself.

So wireless, with good signal, obviously, will deliver the same speed, ie 10mb to the Comp?

If you run a speedtest (try speedtest.net, speed.io or dslzone's test - the first two give you a spot-speed, dslzone's give you a realistic average) you should see the result which your pc is seeing to the Internet, i.e. around (in your example) 10Meg, depending on what speed your router is synced at on your line and what actual data flow there is.

first off, log into your router and look for the line stats to see what speed your line is syncing at, you will need this figure for the dslzone test....

the router itself SHOULDN'T drop much speed as long as it's set up properly, however some routers are definitely better than others, e.g. my D-Link always syncs faster and throughputs faster than the ISP-branded Siemens one that I have...hence I use the D-Link one ;) You should get an actual download speed of around 85% of your sync speed, e.g. router sync speed of 4000 kb/sec, download around 3400 kb/sec

Sorry, terminology clarification required....the speedtest sites above give you your download/upload BANDWIDTH, in my example above the 3400kb/s (~3.4Mb/sec)...actual data download speed for this is around 10-15% or 420kb/sec....
