Economical car for £1500?
Hi, I am looking to buy a car while over in NI this week, as they are generally cheaper over here.
As my husband drives about 400 miles per week, we need something fuel-efficient.
I'm looking at Seat Ibiza, 1.4, or a VWPolo, 1.9 diesel 2002. Can anyone explain to me what mpg is now that we have litres of fuel, and what would be considered good mpg or equivalent?
As I will have to drive this from Belfast to Luton this week with a 2 year old passenger, does anyone know if it is OK to put a child in the passenger seat ( in a proper car seat of course), even if it is fitted with an airbag? I know you can't put a rear facing seat there. I just think she would be much more content to sit in front for such a long journey!!!!

MPG is as I think you know is Miles Per Gallon a gallon is 4.545 liters so you could say Miles Per 4.545 liters but that is a bit of a mouth full. The metric equilvilat of MPG is Liters per 100 kilometers but nobody in the UK would know what a good figure for this is.
Good MPG:- you want to be aiming for maybe 50 plus in a diesel Polo.
Its legal to have the 2 year old in the front but push the seat back as far as possible, however I would say they are safer in the back (but I don't have have evidence)0 -
hi,
I went ahead and bought the Polo last night as it drives beautifully. According to the owner, it would do about 400 miles on £35 of diesel. More fuel-efficient than our wee Suzuki Swift!
Immaculate car with one owner from new. It felt right so I took the plunge.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

£35 of Diesel is about 35 litres, which is about 7.7Gallons. 400 miles is then about 52mpg. Sounds about right.
I bought a Mk3 Golf Estate 1.9 TDi for £450 the other week and that returned 49mpg, including sitting in traffic for ages and loads of stop/start.Happy chappy0
