Domestic Bills..

Sorry can't quite seem to find a clear answer on this but:

As both my wife and I will be going BR soon...

What will happen in respect of Gas, Electric, Telephone, Water Rates & Council Tax?

  • Hi foulplay,

As far as i know any debt on any of the domestic bills that was incurred up to the date of the bankruptcy order can be included in the bankruptcy. After the date of the order then you will be liable for them.

Be aware though that if electric and gas is included into bankruptcy order you will possibly have to have pre-payment meters installed and will no longer be able to do the bill monthly or quarterly.

    EBD :)

    And to avoid this?

  • You pay the arrears but technically you are not allowed to do this as you are giving preferential treatment to a creditor. I had to get my dad to pay the arrers which was £400 before i went bankrupt so i didn't get in trouble.

  • Some gas and electricity companies will allow you to continue paying monthly but more then most will install payment meters.

We are to move home (it's about to be repossed soon), so I'll find out who are the suppliers of the rented accommodation..

It is always handy to use one of the price comparison sites as well to see who the cheapest supplier is in the area and switch to them, unless you are governed by the tenancy as to who supplies the property.
I had arrears with a previous supplier and switched to my current supplier one week before BR. I pay monthly and have an online rate and it was fine. The arrears were included in the BR.

Hi startagain, how were you able to switch if you were in arrears....I thought that it was impossible to switch providers until you had cleared any arrears?

EDIT: and is it possible to switch providers AFTER becoming bankrupt?
