E-bayers freinds Rubber cheque

Hi All,
I rented my chalet out in Mablethorpe through e-bay for a week from Friday 10th to the 17th. I took a deposit of £50 stating this would be refunded provided they is no breakages, I sent a letter confirming the cheque deposit was received from the e-bayer and had cleared in my bank everything fine, She then sent me a letter 2 weeks before the booking with a cheque for the booking amount of £100 but it was in a different name and this was explained in the letter as it was elderly friends staying in my chalet and they had booked their regular chalet else where on the park.

Anyway, The park operates a key card system where I send a key card to their address (in this case the e-bayer) but it did not arrive in time so I arranged to meet them down there with a spare key which I did which all went fine, during their stay I think it was on the Monday or something like that I deposited the cheque in the bank, I would have done it the week before but never got chance!!
Back at home I kept getting electricity people E-on wanting to replace the old meter and kept sending me letters through the post wanting to arrange a time with me, I ignored the letters as I have quite a few bookings.
So come inspection day which I managed to get down last Thursday and I inspected it Saturday bareing in mined it’s been empty for the week, To my horror E-On had swapped the meter on the 16th which I can only think they must have let them in to do the work, Other than that chalet was fine and nothing said about e-on, I gets back home to find their £100 cheque payment was made of rubber (cheque bounced) and Halifax has now charged me £100 for it!!

What can I do?? I have had no corresponce or complaints off them and have not given the deposit back yet.

Please help, Thanks Richard

Little confused are you complaining about the new meter or the rubber cheque. Also Halifax wouldnt charge you for the bounced cheque unless you have been writing cheques before theres cleared and you bounced some. Which i'm afraid is your fault

Forst thing to do is Try and Talk to them/

A business account will incur a fee for a bounced cheque, but £100 seems excessive, are you sure that is what they were actually charging you?

As for what you do now call your tenant/buyer, until you do that there is nothing else you can do. Explain that the cheque bounced so they still owe you a further £50 as you have already cashed their deposit cheque.

Forget the eon meter stuff, if someone knocked on my door in a rented chalet and showed official Id that I recognised I would let them in as well and I'm not quite sure where you are going with the eon tangent.

  • Im not to botherd about e-on but they should not have enterd with out my pomission, I am concerned over the cheque though.

The letter says -- I regret to tell you that the enclosed cheque has not been honoured for the reason stated on the front. Your above account has been debited with the amount.

I assume this means it has bounced!!, The cheque has been stamped on the front "REFER TO DRAWER"

The £100 'charge' is just the value of the cheque being debited.

Like the others have said already, you haven't been 'charged £100' at all.

As for the meter, you'd be surprised what right of access they have especially when someone opens a door and lets them in. It probably would have been simpler to just answer some of their letters.

So basically the situation now is that you are down £50, in that case contact the tenant and ask them for it.
