Thats cos its the old design engine that sounds like a can of bolts coming down the road, Seem to last for ages though just noisy ;)

Yeah it has a chain, so the garage say. I have noticed the engine makes a slight rattling noise but I wouldn't call it noisy!

This engine is a push rod type and therefore has neither cam belt or chain.

The rattling is the tappets that need adjusting, simple job.

1996 I would doubt is the kent unit. More like the valencia or one of the later units.

Either way, if garage say chain, then adjusting the tappets is a doddle and makes the world of difference.

The minster is right it is a pushrod but theres still a chain which drives the camshaft which lifts the pushrods etc etc.
And yes adjusting tappets is an easy job to do although to get them bang on comes with a bit of practice

Thanks for the info about the tappets, hopefully the garage will adjust them. Or maybe my dad if the job is not too difficult.

Hmmm maybe the garage would be better off doing it, after reading this guide http://www.fiestaturbo.com/forums/guide-how-to-adjust-tappets-vt96865/
