Inherited laptop

I have inherited a fairly new HP laptop. I can login as have the user password etc. However, the computer is locked with administrator rights and I cannot install any programmes.

Is there software that can wipe the whole thing and then I can do a rebuild.

Thanks for any advice.

    Dban will do the job.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
  • You would need a proper XP/Vista disc with a valid key to do a clean install.

Best to acquire the HP install discs, if available. Any Win XP /Vista disc will do as you have the codes on a sticker under the PC. Try Win 7 or other OS.

ultimate boot cd. recover the admin password.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • Don't these ultimate cd. recovery disc bypass the admin password ? They cannot display it so you can write it down.

Thanks for your responses. I will weigh up the options. I do have a valid XP cd for my desktop Dell (about 3 years old). What would be the best way forward? Try and wipe the laptop hard disk and do a reinstall?

Do you want any of the data? If not, a dban wipe will remove everything, protecting you from any suspicious files that may have been stored before.

UBCD will let you change it.

which OS do you have on the laptop? if Vista try unchecking User Account Control and install software (in security centre I think) but remember to turn it back on again after the indstall is completed. Or in XP right click the .exe file select properties - general - security and give your user full control
