Hi guys

Every once in a while (and getting more frequent), if I right-click on any icon I get the egg-timer which stays on for ages and I usually end up powering off by holding the power button in for a while.

I've done a HJT log :-

At a quick glance, I did see some PCPitstop (highlighted) stuff left over from when I uninstalled a while ago. I assume that's safe to remove, but would welcome any other help.
I also have Malwarebytes installed as well as SAS and Spybot. AV is Avira, firewall is PCTools free one.

O/S is Windows XP Home SP3

I have just installed Dekaron but the freezing was happening before I did.

hmmm could be something on the right click menu is broken. Download and install Glary Utilities 2.11.0.638 - Slim http://www.glaryutilities.com/builds.html open it and run a one click maintenance scan then fix everything it finds.

Have you tried defragmentating the computer?

Thomas - do that fairly regularly (when I run Ccleaner) but it doesn't seem to help.

Jaffa - Do that one a (roughly) fortnightly basis

Disable pctools firewall temporarily and see if you can right click.

It only happens sporadically, but I'll give it a go and let you know I get on.

not sure what this is, it could be innocent but it says unknown file so im guessing it isnt

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll

i also notice you have your IE start page set as tiscali home page, its not essential to have tiscali home page as your main page

id download firefox and use that as people find its better than ie, how big is your hard drive, how much ram or memorydo you have

If you definitely did uninstall PCPITSTOP then you can FIX those items
Have you updated and run a FULL malwarebytes scan?

LSPFIX should sort out the winsock problem

If none of them do it id hazard a guess its your HIGH DENSITY ram you have (That you shouldnt have). Your lucky it runs at all actually

    Thanks folks
I've just fixed the two PCPitstop items as that went ages ago.
Not wishing to second-guess better minds than mine, the nwprovau.dll file appears to be necessary (according to Google results anyway).

If it helps, this machine is a standalone home PC but I've also installed a Citrix client so I can connect to my works PC.

I'm just about to run a full Malwarebytes scan, and I'll post the log when it's done.

I've tried getting normal RAM in a 1GB "lump" for my machine, but it's a bit pricey (unless you know of somewhere that does it cheap).
I need to have 184-Pin PC3200 DDR if it helps.

    OK - quick update
    Malwarebytes found nothing to report.

  • Doing a right click on an icon causes the shell extensions to be listed. There is a program called ShellExView which may help. It shows what extensions are set, and can be disabled.
